From the Editor...
As the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder (for most of us at least), it is a perfect time to curl up with a good book, study something new, nourish your body with warming foods and enjoy the time we have with our families and friends. To our friends in warm places, don't forget us when we are buried in 10 inches of snow, okay!
So here is something good to read, a few resources to consider for further study and some good eats. ENJOY!
FEATURE ARTICLES:
INTERVIEW WITH RISA PINES - ADVOCATE AND INSPIRATION
Risa is a 48 year old woman with cystic fibrosis. She has had two lung transplants and shares her wisdom with us about the role nutrition and complimentary medicine has played in her life. You will be inspired!!
KNOW YOUR STUFF WHEN IT COMES TO SUPPLEMENTS
This article explores the importance of creating a supplement plan that works for you or your child’s unique micronutrient needs. This paper stems from a burning question I had on how to monitor the nutrient needs of a growing child while being sure that he is also not getting too much. There is a list of commonly prescribed medications and the nutrients they deplete from the body. You will also find information about the methods used to analyze your micronutrient status. This is meant to help you in further discussing your or your child’s nutrient needs with your medical team. Never change your regimen or stop taking a medication or supplement without discussing things with a qualified CF care provider.
MAGIC OF BROTH: I had to resurrect this article with so many of us entering into the colder season. I am “stocking” up my freezer in the next couple weeks, so try making your own broth this year and enjoy the extra health benefits.
NUTRITION NEWS:
CALORIE AND MICRONUTRIENT INFORMATION AVAILABLE SOON FOR ALL RECIPES!!!
Tara and Lizzie, our wonderful graduate students at Bastyr University, have completed all the recipe analyses for us all! I will be slowly and painstakingly (wink) adding them as I can, so come back often to see what you are getting when you use a recipe from this site. I hope it will help all of you plan your meals and accomplish your calorie goals.
STUDENT RESEARCHES BENEFITS OF WHOLE FOODS IN CF CARE: Thank you to those of you who responded to Barb Spruck’s request for participation in a small study she is doing for her senior project at Bauman College in California. She is studying the role of whole foods in CF nutrition and care. She hopes to further her own understanding of CF nutrition care and perhaps inspire other nutrition students and professionals as well. Thank you Barb and keep us posted as you move towards your goal!
INSPIRATION FROM THE KITCHEN:
Chef Brian has created a few more special recipes for all of you to warm and nourish your body. Try his HAWTHORN BRINED CHICKEN BREAST with the many benefits of Hawthorn (Crataegus), PUREED SWEET POTATOES AND PARSNIPS or the THAI PEANUT DRESSING.
Also, in the months to come look for some great and SNEAKY ideas for getting more nutrient rich, high calorie foods into your kids (adults too). I will be sharing some fun recipes which I have adapted from books like SNEAKY CHEF by Missy Lapine and DECEPTIVELY DELICIOUS by Jessica Seinfeld.
From our family to yours, much health and happiness in the new year!
Sincerely,
Jody Pittner
